Drawing on Joint Accreditation Leadership Summit Reports and Joint Accreditation Data Reports from recent years, the manuscript describes the continued growth of the jointly accredited community and the expanding reach of IPCE across healthcare professions, settings, and learner populations. The authors explore how IPCE developed “by and for the healthcare team” supports collaborative practice, strengthens healthcare teams, and aligns continuing education with improvements in patient care and system‑level outcomes.

The article also highlights emerging priorities for the future of IPCE, including deeper engagement of diverse health professions, enhanced measurement of outcomes beyond knowledge acquisition, strengthened patient‑centeredness, and the use of technology to support scalable and accessible interprofessional learning models.

These themes closely align with IPCE Delivers, Joint Accreditation’s campaign to communicate the value and impact of interprofessional continuing education and the critical difference IPCE makes for healthcare teams, organizations, and the patients they serve

New Publication: Addressing Barriers to Interprofessional Practice

A new publication from the National Academies of Practice, Barriers to Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in Healthcare: An Integrated Review, is now available. This comprehensive review synthesizes evidence across care settings to identify common barriers to effective interprofessional collaboration—many of which are directly relevant to the design, delivery, and evaluation of interprofessional continuing education (IPCE).

For jointly accredited providers, the findings offer valuable context for aligning IPCE activities with real‑world practice challenges, strengthening team‑based learning, and supporting improvements in collaborative practice and patient‑centered care. We encourage providers to review this resource and consider how its insights can inform educational planning, outcomes assessment, and continuous improvement efforts.

Publish Your Research and Insights

Jointly accredited providers are encouraged to share their research, innovations, and practical insights with the broader continuing education and interprofessional community. Publishing does not require a randomized, placebo-controlled trial or complex research infrastructure.

Many peer-reviewed journals welcome descriptive reports, case studies, program evaluations, quality improvement initiatives, and lessons learned from practice, making publication far more accessible than it may initially seem.

Sharing your experiences can make a meaningful contribution to the field while helping others learn from your efforts. This can include what worked, what you learned, and how your activity advanced interprofessional continuing education. Publication is an opportunity to tell your story, not a reason to be intimidated.

Several journals that align well with the work of jointly accredited providers include:

  • Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions
  • Journal of CME
  • Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing
  • Journal of Interprofessional Care
  • Journal of Interprofessional Education and Practice

In addition, Joint Accreditation staff may be willing to help or collaborate on publication efforts, depending on the circumstances. If you are interested in publishing but are unsure where to start, have questions about suitability, or would like to explore potential collaboration, you are encouraged to reach out to [email protected] for guidance and support. We are happy to help!

Make Your IPCE Count in JA PARS (in Two Easy Steps!)

Thank you for completing your 2025 annual reporting. As we shift into 2026 planning, we want to share one important reminder that can help ensure your work is accurately reflected in JA‑PARS: when reporting your activities in JA-PARS, be sure to indicate whether or not an activity meets the definition of interprofessional continuing education (IPCE).

Step 1: When entering your activity into JA‑PARS,
answer Yes to “Is this an IPCE activity?” if the activity brings together learners from two or more professions to learn with, from, and about each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.

Note – Accurately reporting IPCE activities in JA‑PARS supports your ability to demonstrate the requirement that at least 25% of your activities are “by the team and for the team.” A quick review of this field as you report activities can help ensure your IPCE work is counted and showcased.

Step 2: If the activity is IPCE, we strongly encourage you to offer IPCE credit alone or alongside any applicable single profession credit.

Note – IPCE credit cannot be offered unless an activity has been indicated as IPCE.

Quick Tip: Consider adding these same questions to your internal planning worksheets so these fields don’t get missed.

New ACCME Policy Prohibits Gift Cards Associated with Accredited CME

In December 2025, the ACCME issued a Call for Comment on a Policy Prohibiting Gift Cards or Personal Remuneration Associated with the Purchase of Accredited CME. Thirty-one responses were received. Thank you to all who took the time to share their feedback.

The ACCME Board of Directors in March 2026 approved and adopted the Policy Prohibiting Gift Cards or Personal Remuneration Associated with the Purchase of Accredited CME. The policy is under consideration by other accrediting bodies, including Joint Accreditation.

Effective immediately, the policy prohibits an ACCME-accredited accredited provider, or any of its agents, from offering, providing, or facilitating a gift card, cash equivalent, or other form of personal remuneration to any individual learner or group of learners as part of, or in association with, the purchase or registration for an accredited CME activity—regardless of who pays the registration fee, including self-payment and circumstances in which an employer, institution, or other entity pays for or reimburses participation.

COMPLIANCE CHECK: TIPS FOR JOINT PROVIDERSHIP CHECKLIST

Joint providership can be a valuable way for your organization to expand your educational offerings and reach new learners. We want you to be successful in these collaborations with nonaccredited providers.

The following checklist can help you manage joint providership with confidence:

  • Stay informed
Ask staff to enter activities into JA’s Program and Activity Reporting System (JA-PARS) as they are developed.
  • Build in oversight
Assign more than one staff member to enter activities.
  • Do a quality check
Regularly review JA-PARS data, disclosures, and the accreditation statement. Check the activity for content validity. Complete these reviews early and often, prior to the activity start.
  • Stay on track
Be mindful of your responsibility to meet all accreditation deadlines.

Reach out to us at [email protected] if you have questions.

Upcoming Change: ABTS To Retire Self-Reporting of CME Credit by Diplomates

The American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) has announced an upcoming change in how Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit is recognized for ABTS Continuing Certification (CC) requirements. Effective December 31, 2027, ABTS will retire self-reporting of CME credit by diplomates. This means that for an ABTS surgeon to have their CME credit count toward their ABTS Continuing Certification (CC) requirements, CME credit must be reported directly by the accredited provider through PARS (or JA-PARS, as applicable) beginning January 1, 2028.
