LEARNING TOGETHER AT THE JOINT ACCREDITATION LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

We were thrilled to welcome more than 140 participants to Chicago for the ninth annual Joint Accreditation Leadership Summit in May. For the first time, the Summit was hosted in conjunction with Learn to Thrive 2023, ACCME’s annual meeting. Attendees from 69 jointly accredited providers joined together to celebrate their achievements, embrace their roles as leaders in the interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) community, and discuss strategies and best practices for their ascent toward collaborative education. We sincerely thank our meeting participants, faculty, volunteers, and staff whose support made this meeting possible.

REVISION TO JOINT ACCREDITATION CRITERION 6

Joint Accreditation thanks the providers who responded to our call for comment earlier this year concerning a proposed change to Joint Accreditation Criterion 6 (JAC6). The proposed change has been approved by the boards of the founding organizations and is effective immediately. The new JAC 6 reads: The provider utilizes an integrated planning process that includes health care professionals who are reflective of the target audience the activity is designed to address. This is not a new expectation, but rather an articulation of the expectation that Joint Accreditation has that the planning process for IPCE should reflect the target audience.

COMING SOON: ACCME AND ABOS COLLABORATION

We are happy to share that the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) has joined the CME for MOC Collaboration to allow digital reporting of CME and maintenance of certification (MOC) credits for orthopaedic surgeons, with a targeted launch date of early October 2023. This will make tracking and managing this data easier for you, easier for your learners, and will benefit the community as a whole. The collaboration with the ABOS is one of several that ACCME has with many other boards who use this system for hundreds of thousands of doctors nationally and is designed to be quick and easy to use. Watch this brief video for an overview of how the digital hub for CME credit data works.

COMPLIANCE CHECK: JOINT PROVIDERSHIP

Compliance Check is a new series of quick tips to help you meet accreditation requirements.

Joint providership is an important part of the system of accreditation, allowing accredited providers to significantly expand the availability of accredited continuing medical education/continuing education (CME/CE) by collaborating with nonaccredited organizations. Accredited providers in good standing may offer joint providership services. The accredited provider is responsible for meeting all of the requirements applicable to the activity, even those delegated to the Joint Provider.

If you offer joint providership, follow these four steps to comply with expectations and maintain your accreditation:

  1. Due Diligence: Before agreeing to collaborate with an organization, ask about their recent accreditation and activity history. Organizations that have lost or relinquished their own accreditation or have jointly provided with several organizations in a short period of time should be evaluated carefully.
  2. Content Validity: Carefully review the content of jointly provided activities. Exercise caution with organizations that offer or encourage unconventional approaches to medical care, since these organizations are typically ineligible for accreditation.
  3. Marketing Materials: Obtain, review, and approve all marketing materials, emails, and websites that list or refer to the activity, and continue to evaluate those sites and listings while they are active. Inappropriate use of logos, incentives, and gift cards have been associated with marketing materials created for jointly provided activities.
  4. Withdrawing from any Contract without Penalty: Empower yourself to withdraw accreditation from an activity at any time without penalty, since issues with compliance and content validity may only become apparent late in the activity development or deployment process.
